Oil and Gas Mines Engineering Department
1) Introducing the Department of Oil and Gas Mines Engineering
The Department of Oil and Gas Mines Engineering was established in 1967 concurrent with the establishment of Kabul Polytechnic University. It was initially launched under the name (Department of Geology, Investigation, Exploration, and Extraction of Oil and Gas Fields). Its primary objective was to serve as a center for educating and training professional oil and gas engineers.
Since its inception in 1967, the Department of Oil and Gas Mines Engineering has functioned within the Faculty of Geology and Mines at Kabul Polytechnic University to progress the economy of the country. It serves as a scientific hub, engaging in scholarly pursuits, particularly in the training of geological and mines engineers. In 2013, the department underwent a name change to the Department of Oil and Gas Mining Engineering, following the recommendation of the department's council of professors and the competent authorities of the Ministry of Higher Education.
The department specializes in providing comprehensive education in geology, geological mapping, geophysics, oil and gas well drilling, calculation of oil and gas reservoirs, extraction techniques for oil and gas fields, as well as exploratory drilling for valuable solid materials and drinking water wells. Its primary aim is to produce skilled experts in these specific domains to contribute to society.
Throughout its existence, the department has endeavored to establish collaborative relationships with the Ministry of Mines, to enhance theoretical courses and facilitate practical field applications for students within the country's production sites. Several laboratories are available within the Department of Oil and Gas Mining Engineering to facilitate practical work such as a geology lab, geochemistry lab, reservoir engineering lab, exploratory and industrial geophysics lab, and well drilling lab. However, the Geophysics and Scientific Research Laboratory of the Ministry of Mines, located in the Polytechnic University, but unfortunately destroyed or looted during the civil wars and remains unreconstructed and inoperable.
The department professors authored textbooks, laboratory manuals, and lecture notes on various subjects. These educational materials have been published and made available for student use.
Currently, the department maintains a robust process for writing and translating textbooks through the efforts of experienced professors. This has resulted in the publication of various books: Oil and Gas Well Drilling, Exploratory Geophysics, Thermodynamic, Industrial Geophysics, and Oil and Gas Geochemistry. These resources have been invaluable in enhancing the teaching process and elevating the academic standards for students.
