Information Systems Department
Information Systems is considered one of the five core computer disciplines in the world. This field covers topics such as the fundamentals of information systems, databases, management, web technologies, e-commerce, information security, and the basics of mobile applications in its curriculum. The vision of the Information Systems Department is to link Afghanistan with the global advancements in information systems and modern communications by providing high-quality higher education.
At various levels within an organization, information systems can make daily tasks faster and more accurate. Key information systems include databases and information management systems. Other examples of these systems include:
- Transaction Process Systems (TPS)
- Enterprise Collaboration Systems (ECS)
- Management Information Systems (MIS)
- Decision Support Systems (DSS)
- Executive Support Systems (ESS)
Objectives of the Information Systems Department:
- To offer a high-quality program in information technology and computer-based information systems, preparing students to compete globally, secure jobs in government and private organizations, and pursue further studies.
- To be committed to research and other scholarly activities for advancement, promotion, and collaboration with the undergraduate program, as well as to support the educational, intellectual, and professional growth of students and faculty.
- To collaborate in the scientific field of information technology and computer-based information systems.
- To promote a cooperative environment, teamwork, and a strong interest in learning and education.
Vision:
Information Systems has brought a major revolution in the world, and countries have achieved significant advancements by using this technology. The vision of the Information Systems Department is to link Afghanistan with the global progress in information technology and communications through the provision of high-quality higher education.
The department aims, through a standardized curriculum and the delivery of quality courses, to transform itself and Kabul Polytechnic University into one of the key scientific and research centers in information technology and communications at both the national and regional levels.
The Information Systems Department is committed to actively contributing to the development and progress of society and good governance through the use of information and communication technology, and to providing skilled professionals to the community for this purpose.
Additionally, the department seeks to serve as a credible scientific and research center in Afghanistan, leading in research and the implementation of information technology projects, while gaining the trust of the government and private institutions in this field.

The Information Systems Department supports the mission of Kabul Polytechnic University by offering high-quality courses for the undergraduate program. The mission of the department also includes providing focused and environment-oriented courses that enable students, staff, and faculty members to achieve their goals.
The department strives to prepare its students for global competition and to equip them for employment in government, private companies, further studies, or admission to higher universities.
The curriculum of this department is related to the field of Information Systems. It provides students with opportunities to gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of the discipline, as well as specialized theories, practical skills, and academic principles to advance their educational development.
Activities of the Information Systems Department:
The Information Systems Department of the Faculty of Computer Science at Kabul Polytechnic University carries out diverse and effective activities in the following areas to achieve its educational, research, and developmental goals:
1. Educational Activities
- Teaching theoretical and practical subjects according to the updated and standardized curriculum of the Ministry of Higher Education.
- Conducting practical work in the department’s laboratories.
- Enhancing students’ practical skills in programming, databases, web development, and mobile applications.
- Implementing modern teaching methods based on projects, problem-solving, and experiential learning.
2. Research and Scientific Activities
- Conducting scientific research in intelligent systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and information science.
- Encouraging students to undertake innovative and research projects at the undergraduate level.
- Providing academic guidance and supervision for semester projects, practical exercises, and graduation theses.
- Participation of faculty members in national and international conferences, seminars, and scientific workshops.
3. Laboratory and Practical Activities
- Equipping and maintaining laboratories.
- Conducting practical exercises of various subjects individually and in groups.
- Implementing practical projects in the field of information systems.
4. Capacity-Building Activities
- Organizing seminars, workshops, and training programs for students and faculty.
- Enhancing the academic and professional capacity of teaching staff through educational and research programs.

7. Administrative and Regulatory Activities
- Implementing the regulations and policies of the Ministry of Higher Education.
- Reviewing and improving the curriculum according to scientific advancements and labor market needs.
- Managing the academic, laboratory, and documentation affairs of the department.

Computer Lab:
The Information Systems Department has four classrooms and a relatively well-equipped computer lab for teaching, practical work, and implementing class projects.

In this bachelor degree program, the subjects are divided into four categories according to the requirements of Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), Afghanistan. The categories along with their required percentage in overall degree program, which is provided by the MoHE is given below.
· General Subject (should be less than 12% of the overall degree credits.)
· Basic Subjects (should be less than 30% of the overall degree credits.)
· Core Subjects (should be more than 50% of overall degree credits)
· Project (should be more than 8% of overall degree credits)
