Geology Engineering and Hydrogeology (MEGH)

Brief Introduction to the Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology Program

Engineering geology and hydrogeology is one of the engineering programs. Therefore, it was necessary to take a big step towards the progress and excellence of society with a correct and comprehensive planning to train young talents. Thus, in order to develop scientific programs, the request of a number of relevant agencies and institutions, particularly graduates of the engineering geology and hydrogeology field, to establish a master's program in the field of engineering geology and hydrogeology, and the need assessment carried out by the Department of Geology Engineering and Hydrogeology, the establishment of a master's program in engineering geology and hydrogeology was identified as a critical necessity for Afghan society. Therefore, the Department of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology of Kabul Polytechnic University took the initiative to establish a master's program titled “Engineering geology and Hydrogeology”. This program is designed to support research, develop self-sufficiency, and train specialists in the field of engineering geology and hydrogeology to serve the community and contribute to the sustainable development of the country. Moreover, the five-year strategic plan of Kabul Polytechnic University has given special importance to postgraduate programs.

The construction of sustainable infrastructure such as highways, bridges, tunnels, water dams for electricity generation, airports and pipelines, and natural disaster management requires engineering geology studies. On the other hand, the increase in urbanization and population density in the country's major cities has led to the reduction of groundwater resources and groundwater contamination. The appropriate use water, wastewater treatment, water resource exploration, water storage and distribution, and other important and essential issues in society have become important and necessary issues, and there is a need for education and research in these areas.

Students of this field, by acquiring specialized skills in groundwater resource management and engineering geology, will be capable of addressing the country’s major challenges in these areas. In addition to having the abilities of a researcher and analyst, these graduates will possess deep academic and research-based knowledge in engineering geology and hydrogeology. As a result, they will be more efficient and able to effectively apply what they have learned in these fields. Such graduates will not only be qualified to work in all professional areas of this discipline, but they will also be able to take on higher-level scientific, research, and executive responsibilities. Upon completion of the specialized master’s program, they will also be eligible to work as academic staff in universities and other scientific and research institutions.

The policy document and curriculum of the Master's Program in Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology has been approved and endorsedby the Ministry of Higher Education of Afghanistan, and this program will begin in the fall semester of current year (2025). During this period, students will engage in educational and research activities in various fields of engineering geology and hydrogeology.
