Building Construction Management Department :
The Building Construction Management a recent emerged independent disciplines in Engineering with intention of filling the management need of modern and developed construction for that reason most of accrediting Engineering Universities in the world offer courses in Construction Management. Accordingly, Kabul Polytechnic University (KPU) as an innovative and ingenious University in Afghanistan established the Building Construction Management (BCM) Department under the school of construction in 2011 to fulfill the current need of society and construction market to be according to the contemporary developments in the area of construction engineering. The curricula for this undergraduate program is designed in compliance to the world best universities’ curriculums and based on Afghanistan requirements.
Dr. Mohammad Yossuf Kayoumi a senior professor at the KPU was assigned as the first head of department from 2011 to 2015, and since then Associate Professor Amanullah Faqiri a principal lecturer at Civil and Industrial Construction Department has been working as the head of BCM department.
The first batch of students was admitted to the program through governmental universities entry exam (KANCORE) in 2014 that they are now studying in sixth terms of the program. The Building Construction Management Department accepts annually around 50 students where in addition to the core courses of the program they are taking complementary Departmental courses of the Kabul Polytechnic University.
Currently, the total numbers of students studying in BCM department are 152 persons of which 125 of them are males and the rest 27 are females which are being taught by experienced and pundit lecturers of KPU.
The BCM department courses are being taught as per up to date teaching methods by utilizing E-technology, motivating students by student-centered course design, giving assignments and course projects in each course to the students, and also assessing students through diagnostic, summative and formative assessment methods to enable students and to achieve the program objectives.
In aftermath countries like Afghanistan, there is an extensive need for educated and trained people in engineering area to help reconstruction. The BCM department main objective is to accept the applicants through a merit and talent base competitive process for the Afghanistan prosperity and burgeon.
The BCM undergraduate program is a nine-semester full time 175 Credits program that has been designed and approved by Kabul Polytechnic University Academic Council and the Ministry of Higher Education developmental program committee.
In this nine semesters program, first eight semesters (total of166 credits) students take lecture and practice courses and also in the last ninth semester each student is being appointed to a nine credits diploma project to be worked under the mentor instructions in desired concentrations. By complication of diploma projects, students are required to present their work to the specified academic panel for examination and acceptance. After successfully completing and defending students’ diploma project, successful students are being awarded an undergraduate degree B.S. in Building Construction Management.
The BCM Department Faculty Members:
The BCM department currently has 10 faculty members holding Ph.D., Master and Bachelor degrees teaching BCM courses to the students at KPU.
In addition to giving lectures to the students, the BCM department faculties are conducting researches, preparing teaching materials, instructing students on their course and diploma projects, taking students to hands-on lab and site work, attending in academic conferences and seminars. The senior faculties of the department guiding junior faculties regarding their research papers and how to get materials for literature review to define their research questions and finally to conduct researches.
