History of Architectural department :
In 1360 Ministry of Higher Education took a decision to create Architectural department as one of the crucial and important department within construction faculty at Kabul Polytechnic University (KPU) for the education of young Afghans. It was the first time and a golden choice for Afghans to complete their higher education in the field of architecture.
Our department has mutual contract with Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Urban Planning and Kabul Municipality which help us to attend seminars and discuss the problems they are facing and finding practical solution to them. In the architecture department at KPU there are seven professional senior and assistant lecturers including the followings:
In addition to teaching, our lecturers and assistant lecturers perform academic research projects to improve their knowledge and provide new teaching materials to the students. Now, we do research in the following areas:
1- Study and analyses of the Architectural and Urban planning issue;
2- Study of the new build cities with Afghanistan;
3- Study of the methods and design of building architecture in Afghanistan;
4- Study of Afghanistan climate in different zones;
5- Providing code of practice and norms about residential and trade buildings.
Every year in addition to the academic research we do translate many assistive books from English and Russian language to our national languages. Also, some of our lectures have published many Architecture books which are important material and information for student and professional Architects/Engineers. In order to develop and educate our young assistant lecturers we deliver seminars every year and analyze all of the new research papers that are published within KPU and Architectural deportment/faculty.
Architecture department has the basic equipment’s and furniture to complete the needs of the department. We decided to reconstruct the former building phenomena museum of Afghanistan located at KPU, Construction physics lab and drawings and model making labs soon. Our drawing halls are equipped with computers and basic furniture which help us in theoretical and practical teaching. Our fourth and final year student design their final year and diploma projects with the help of developed computer software such as Auto CAD and Revit/3D Max. The final year students do their diploma projects in the field of Architecture and do design different buildings such us: Architecture design of (Schools, Hospital, Polyclinics, Mosques, Banks, Residential and Trade buildings, Terminals, Sport complex, Clops, and Factory) buildings. Student usually select a site from Master plan within Kabul and or provinces and then complete Architecture design of that specific project both in ten A1 graphical sheets and a hundred illustrative A4 pages as a monograph .
Duration of study is nine semesters ( 4 ½ ) years for the bachelor degree in Architecture and their final semester is defense or diploma semester and they need to complete Architectural design of a building and then present it to a nominated commission. This commission includes lecturers from Construction faculty and delegates of Ministry of Urban Planning, Kabul University and other Engineering institutions. After successfully presenting their projects the commission gives them the title of an Architect. After their graduate those young Architects can work in different Governmental and private offices to improve their practical knowledge and take part in the reconstruction process of the country.
All students are introduced through MoHE to KPU Architectural department and they need to attend two semesters (one year) of general courses and learn the foundation of Architecture and Engineering. In semester three they start their compulsory subjects. Every year we do accept between -50-60 students and train them as professional Architects in nice semesters. We develop our curricula with the help of foreign consultants and now we have standard curricula like many other standard Architectural faculties and departments. Our graduates are quite familiar with international norms and standards and we in addition to our national codes use the following codes: International Building Code, Metric Handbook, Neofurt... The curricula cover all the standards and typology which our graduates needs while designing any types of buildings. In our bachelor degree from semester (1-9) we have 42 subjects and a total of 172 credits that cover all aspects of Architecture such as Social, Cultural, Economic and Technical side of our town and building Architecture issues. The compulsory subjects include the followings: Architectural design; Theory of Architecture; Town planning; History of Architecture; Building composition; Building Typology; Construction Physics; Interior of Architecture; Environmental studies and dedicated course of Architecture and Building elements.
